        THE TECHNICAL BIT






        HIGH VISIBILITY CLOTHING STANDARDS

        EN ISO 20471 – These standards are applicable when choosing high visibility clothing. These relate to the amount of reflective and
        high visibility material on the garment. They will also show the class that they relate to.

        Class 1: Lowest Level - Typically consist of lower body or partially fluorescent garments.

        Class 2: Mid Level -  Typically consists of short or no sleeve garments and some trousers.
        Class 3: Highest Level - Typically consists of upper body & full sleeved garments.




        GO/RT 3279- This is the rail group standard minimum requirement for high visibility clothing that is worn by people on the lineside or
        near the line.

        GO/RT 3279 has now been superseded by RIS-3279-TOM.





        EN 343 – Clothing (either hi-vis or non-hi-vis clothing) that has rain protection & waterproof properties.

        Class 3:1 - Level 3 to water penetration; level 1 water vapour resistance (breathability).
        Class 3:2 -  Level 3 to water penetration; level 2 water vapour resistance (breathability).

        Class 3:3 - Level 3 to water penetration; level 3 water vapour resistance (breathability).







        EN 531 - Protection against Heat & Flame. This conformity often has a letter after it which relates to the following:
        A: Limited flame spread (Fabric conforms to EN533 Index 3) B: (B1-B5) - Insulation against convective heat

        C: (C1-C5) - Insulation against radiant heat D: (D1-D3) - Insulation against molten aluminium

        E: (E1-E3) - Insulation against molten cast iron







        EN533 - Protection against Limited Flame Spread EN1149-5 - Electrostatic Protection

        EN ISO 11612- Heat & Flame Protection EN467 - Liquid Chemical Protection

        EN ISO 11611- EN ISO 11612- Heat & Flame Protection

        EN381 - Chainsaw Protection
        EN510 - Entanglement Protection (moving parts)
